Standard Fare: March 13 @ Cafe Nine

We’re very excited to be hosting Standard Fare all the way from Sheffield UK next month. Mark March 13 on your calendar for another night of great pop music. Joining Standard Fare will be New Haven’s The Cavemen Go and New London’s Conversion Party.

Here’s what some blogs are saying about Standard Fare:

Oddbox Blog: This new single ‘Fifteen’, again on Thee SPC, is set to lay a marker down early doors for single of 2010. ‘Fifteen’ the song, is pop perfection. Emma Kupa’s voice is one of those beguiling things – powerful, fragile and totally mesmerising and yet it still manages to be one of the catchiest songs you are likely to stumble upon, this or any year. Hiding within the grooves is a darker song about wanting someone who is under-age. Standard Fare have a sound that could loosely be described as a cross between old school British indie and US college radio indie from the 80s. That’s not to say that they sound American, the don’t. But if you were to meld together indiepop with sounds that American bands like Throwing Muses and early REM made you could well be a bit closer to fathoming how Standard Fare make sounds so deceptively simple sound so damn infectious. The B side ‘Understand’ is a gentler number and it shows that the band have more than one string to their bow. I can not wait for their début LP to be released – lucky for me (and you) that ‘The Noyelle Beat’ will be out in March. Good times.

Norman Records: There’s a little buzz about this band Standard Fare. That is totally justified entirely as their debut single ‘Fifteen’ recalls classic, sprinting C86 shamble ‘n’ jangle indie, spilling with spirit & gusto. Musically it reminds me of a less twee & more muscular Heavenly or Liechtenstein’s less angular, more straight guitar pop stuff. Singer Emma has a really strong, hearty voice & the song makes me shed a nostalgic tear for beloved times listening to Peel in my teens & twenties. Really heartening to hear a band that transcends pastiche & effortlessly arrives with the equivalent of a lost gem.

Piccadilly Records: Love this! “Fifteen” is a great slice of jangly indie pop that rattles along at a fair old pace and although it’s kinda cute it’s ballsy too, mainly down to singer Emma’s great vocals. “Understand” on the flip, is a slower more introspective song, that recalls Morrissey’s songwriting at it’s best. Ones to keep an eye on this year I think.

Pop N Cherries Blog: While A-side “Fifteen” perfectly fulfills the role of the infectious sing-along hit, B-side “Understand” gives Emma’s voice another chance to kiss the stars on a splendid New Pornographers-like tune, full of melodic brilliance & emphasis.

And check out the cute DIY video above for “Dancing” — made up of photos of the band and random photos of people dancing — it’s great.

Boy Genius will return to headline the Friday kick-off show and they’ll be joined by special guest Mr. Ray Neal of Miracle Legion. Those that saw The Geniuses and Mr. Ray play during the Steven Deal record release show caught a great set. Veronica Falls will be joining us all the way from the UK. This is their first U.S. tour and we’re proud to be their first stop. The band has a great pop/shoegaze sound and they have a recent release on the Captured Tracks label. Steven Deal will be back to tear things up with his brand of powerpop.

Panda Riot and Midstates will be making a stop Saturday afternoon on their tour from Chicago. Midstates plays some great psych-influenced pop and Panda Riot should impress with their shoegaze sounds. Eula will bring the rock to the ArtSpace gallery in the early evening.

The ArtSpace Underground will feature The Secret History, featuring My Favorite’s Michael Grace as well as Lisa Ronson, daughter of glam legend and Bowie-collaborator Mick Ronson. The Butterflies of Love will close out the weekend. We’re proud to have the Butterflies of Love fresh from the success of the Mark Mulcahy tribute shows.

Come back Wednesday, May 26 for the debut of Tyler Trudeau side project Women’s Basketball as well as a visit from UK popsters Horowitz. There may be other special guests from overseas as well.

Check the Elm City PopFest blog often between now and the pop fest for special posts on all the bands.

Friday night (Feb. 19) is the big compilation release show at Cafe Nine. We’re excited to have FayRey back for this show … they’ll be playing toward the beginning of the line-up, so get there on time. We got a really good response to FayRey’s set at the Elm City PopFest last November, and they’ll be playing as a trio this time around, so I’m expecting great things.

Both of these videos are from the popfest in November.

Slam Donahue will be playing February 19 at the “Home and Abroad Songs Vol. 2″ compilation release at Cafe Nine. I’m excited to see these guys. I really like their sound and have been enjoying the recordings. Above is the video for “These Things,” which appears on the comp. Below is the video for “Keep It All Complete” — I really like this video — very cool concept.

Come out and hear them along with NYC’s The Ballet, FayRey and Westbrook’s DayPape.

La Strada, M.T. Bearington and The Fictional West @ Rudy’s — Feb. 6

Next Saturday will be the first (and hopefully not the last) teaming of Tweefort with New Haven’s Safety Meeting Records. Come out to Rudy’s for cheap beer, great frites and three pop bands — La Strada, M.T. Bearington and The Fictional West.

Chances are you already know M.T. Bearington, and if not, you used to like one of their old bands. However, if that’s not the case, M.T. Bearington makes driving psych-pop music that’s sure to get under your skin and make a home in your head. The band is also getting ready to head out on a mini-tour with none other than Mates of State.

La Strada makes undeniably charming pop music that’s a little chamber pop, a little indie pop and a whole lotta fun. It’s rare to see strings and accordion on stage at Rudy’s, so don’t miss out.

The Fictional West have a single out now on Tweefort Records. They’re getting comparisons to Orange Juice, The Magnetic Fields and The Smiths. Limited by their non-fictional surroundings, these New Haven natives decided to combine their varied interests in indie pop, 80s new wave sounds and satirical themes into some nice low-key tunes. Go download the single if you haven’t yet.

Saturday, FEB. 6: La Strada, M.T. Bearington and The Fictional West
Live at Rudy’s, 372 Elm St, New Haven
$4, 21+ Music begins after 9 p.m.

Steven Deal ‘Radio Twelve’ record release @ Cafe Nine — Jan. 8

Steven Deal has been playing music since he was 13 years old. Deal first had to sneak into clubs, but at age 18 he got a notarized note from his parents to play when his band, Bleached Black, got its first record deal with Relativity/Sony. Deal toured the USA and Canada several times as a support act for groups such as Dinosaur Jr., Das Damen, The Screaming Trees and The Neighborhoods, to name a few. Deal has worked with producers Lou Giordano (Husker Du, Volcano Suns, GooGoo Dolls, etc.) and Peter Katis (Interpol, Philistines, Jr., Babyheads, Zambonis, etc.) among many others. Deal has also played in bands such as Chopper, The Absolute Zeros and The Naomi Star and appeared in the New Haven punk/new wave documentary “It Happened But Nobody Noticed.”

After a 10+ year writing hiatus, singer-songwriter Steven Deal returns with the pop punk album he’s always wanted to record. Clocking in at under 40 minutes total running time, RADIO TWELVE is his first solo album ever. RADIO TWELVE contains 11 “hate” songs — beer and brandy-soaked pop anthems, stories of romantic misery, self-loathing and megalomania. With a little help from his friends Dan Kohler (Naomi Star), Lisa Hammer (Requiem In White, Mors Syphilitica, and of the TV series “The Venture Brothers”), Chris Cretella, and Dave Parmelee, Deal has offered a window to the world of disappointment, unfulfilled promise and resentment, all the while never losing a keen pop sensibility or lyrical prowess. Semi-autobiographical and very real, RADIO TWELVE is a concise damnation of the romantic condition.

Boy Genius is an indiepop band based out of Brooklyn, NY. They find inspiration in the pop and college rock anthems of the ’90s, including R.E.M., The Lemonheads and Miracle Legion. Boy Genius’ latest album, “Staggering,” is creating major buzz on indiepop blogs around the country.

Mold Monkies contain members of The Absolute Zeros, of which Steven Deal was a member. They play their own brand of powerpop and draw influence from and comparison to bands such as Guided By Voices, Blur, The Kinks and Husker Du.

Steven Deal will release his album, “Radio Twelve,” Friday, Jan. 8 at Cafe Nine, 200 State St., New Haven. Boy Genius and Mold Monkies will also play. Music starts at 10 p.m. This is a FREE show. 21+

ArtSpace Underground with Swarm The Moon and Steve Deal — Dec. 12

ArtSpace Underground returns Saturday, Dec. 12 with two great bands and a huge fashion show. Get ready to be impressed.

ArtSpace Underground presents EXCENTRAGLAM — A fashion show with 15+ designers. DJ Peter Kuhn will spin. Live music from Swarm The Moon, plus the solo debut of Steven Deal. As always … it’s $5 to get in with drinks by 116 Crown. ArtSpace Underground is always all-ages.

Swarm the Moon, from New Haven, formed late in the summer of 2009 when Anthony Acock (drums,) Thom Smith (guitar) and Tim Leonard (vocals/guitar) got sick of reading each other’s desperate pleas on Facebook looking to start a band and decided to get together and do something about it. Matty Mauro later joined in on bass, and the band was complete. Each member brings a very different musical background to the band and the end result is a tasty blend of equal parts noise, pop and rock. They have already drawn comparisons ranging from early Promise Ring to Sonic Youth. This will be their last show before they record their debut EP in January of 2010. Expect to hear much more from them in the coming year.

Steven Deal (ex-Bleached Black, Chopper, and Absolute Zeros) has been playing since he was 13 years old. He dropped out of college to tour the USA and Canada several times as a support act for groups such as Dinosaur Jr., Das Damen, The Screaming Trees and The Neighborhoods, to name a few. Deal has worked with producers Lou Giordano (Husker Du, Volcano Suns, GooGoo Dolls, etc.) and Peter Katis (Interpol, Philistines, Jr., Babyheads, Zambonis, etc.) among many others. After a 10+ year writing hiatus, singer-songwriter Deal returns with the pop punk album he’s always wanted to record. clocking in at under 40 minutes total running time, RADIO TWELVE is his first solo album ever, 11 “hate” songs, beer and brandy-soaked pop anthems, stories of romantic misery, self-loathing and megalomania.

ArtSpace New Haven, 50 Orange St. (corner of Orange and Crown). Doors open at 7 p.m. $5. All-ages.
